Mayumi Nishimura Madonna’s Chef Appearing on Marlene & Friends

One of my favourite ‘sweet souls’ on the planet is Mayumi Nishimura.  An incredible chef who is well known for making delicious healthy macrobiotic food for stars of stage and screen. Mayumi also teaches macrobiotic cooking to young mothers, college students, trains chefs, and lectures on an array of health topics to a wide audience around the globe.

In 1982, Mayumi Niimi left Japan for the United States to study with Michio and Aveline Kushi, renowned world leaders of the macrobiotic movement. Adapting her experience with Japanese cuisine to macrobiotics she soon became head chef and cooking instructor at the Kushi Institute in Massachusetts, a position which she held for over 15 years. During this time she also cooked for and helped many cancer patients recover under the guidance of Michio Kushi.

In 2001, Mayumi became Madonna’s personal macrobiotic chef, living and travelling with her in London, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and many other places for about 10 years. During this time Mayumi also cooked macrobiotic meals for other well-known celebrities including Sting, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney and Guy Ritchie. 

Seeking to promote macrobiotic ideas to a broader audience, she introduced “petit-macro”, a gentler approach to macrobiotics in 2008. She also wrote several books including her biography and recipe book, “Mayumi’s Kitchen”, which has been translated and published in the US, Europe and Asia.

In 2009 and 2010, Mayumi visited the Finley Institute, a center for vaccines research in Cuba, to teach and demonstrate macrobiotic principles and cooking.

In 2013, Mayumi worked with UHA MIKAKAUTO Co. to create a product called “HAPPY DATES”, a “petit-macro” snack.  She also wrote a recipe book for tasty and healthy smoothies.

Mayumi currently works as a life and health coach and private chef, and continues to stay active domestically and internationally, promoting macrobiotics around the world.
