A question that I am asked over and over again is how do we keep our youthfulness, our vigour and good health until later years? My guest this week on Marlene & Friends is Joel Fuhrman M.D. six times New York Times best selling author. He is the founding father of Nutritarian eating and in our interview Dr. Fuhrman will share with you all, how to age slower.
Dr. Fuhrman is also the President and Research Director of the Nutritional Research Foundation, https://www.nutritionalresearch.org and is a frequent guest on The Dr. Oz Show, for which he serves on the medical advisory board.
The core philosophy behind Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat to Live concept is eating a diet with a rich micronutrient density. As Dr. Fuhrman explains, foods give us macronutrients or calories – fats carbohydrates and protein and food also gives us micronutrients those foods that do not contain calories, that is minerals vitamins and phytochemicals.
If we eat too much of the macronutrients we can become overweight, and promote ageing, we must eat foods that are high in nutrients including these micronutrients like green vegetables. Greens win the award because they have more nutrients per calorie than any other food. We require therefore a diet that is high in micronutrients (high nutrient density) in every mouthful of food we eat daily.
If you take broccoli as an example, these greens are also high in protein, that is how gorillas, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes grow so big because they eat lots of green vegetables and get loads of protein. With an abundance of greens in your daily diet you have the protein packaged with loads of micronutrients – with the phytochemicals with the antioxidants, with the things that make the body age slower.
As you all know, since my early teens I have always been in love with moving my body, as has Dr. Fuhrman. Now in his 60’s, Dr. Fuhrman still loves to participate in the various sports he enjoyed in his 20’s. I am 60 next year, I still adore teaching Chiball and Yoga and at 74 years old my beloved husband Bill and I love nothing more than being out on our bicycles.
