Grilled Lentil Burgers
So many theories abound about eating a wholefoods diet. As I love to dispel a myth or two I would like to reiterate that eating a healthy diet is inexpensive. That’s my reply to all who suggest that adopting a wholefoods plant based diet is outwith their budget. In fact, some of the healthiest foods in the world are cheap, I mean really cheap.
Cut out the processed packaged foods along with meat, dairy and sugar laden foods for three weeks and count how much money you will save on your shopping bill. The brown lentils that I am using in today’s video have incredible health benefits; lowering cholesterol, reducing your risk of heart disease, superb for digestive health because of their insoluble dietary fibre (the roughage) that prevents constipation and other digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis.
Stabilized blood sugar, another amazing benefit of fibre, because soluble fibre traps carbohydrates, slowing down digestion and stabilizing blood sugar levels. All legumes should be used daily for those with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycaemia. Lentils like all beans and legumes are a fantastic source of protein. They are very low in calories so are perfect to use in any weight loss programme because they leave you feeling full and satisfied. A wholefoods plant based diet is sweeping the Mainstream. It seems only yesterday that those who chose to embark on a vegetarian or vegan diet found themselves on the periphery of society. Since we returned a few years ago to the U.K. Bill and I have seen an upsurge in our work for Macrobiotic Health Counselling, Cooking Classes and Workshops. Testimony to that is the fact that we now have students who have come to study with us on our Macrobiotic Health Coach Programme from all areas of the U.K. and from 17 different countries. How wonderful and how exciting to us both to see our course growing world wide. This is Sam one of our recent graduates who flew over from Florida to participate in our two week intensive. Health Starts with Your Diet!
For optimal Health eat foods that harness the innate power of your immune system and quench inflammation. All extremes require balance and that is why Macrobiotics is so unique. It offers ‘guidelines ‘to live in the zone’ as I like to call it, that creates zero nutritional stress.
Many get too caught up with the ‘word’. Happy, Healthy, Dead, that’s how I believe life should be and that is why I will continue to teach what I teach.

Simply eat a diet of fresh wholefoods and live in harmony with nature. There really is nothing complicated about this. The Macrobiotic approach to health that I love and adore reflects thousands of years of experience, observation and research in Asia. The ‘medicine’ of the Far East understood that the body is a self-healing organism when treated well. If you follow the basic principles you will be full of vitality and free of the diseases that millions are suffering from. Latest figures now show that 200 million people have diabetes! It’s time to focus on prevention instead of treatment.
Your body was designed to maintain equilibrium of health, and one of the basic cornerstones is your diet. I believe that simple home cooking and using local food is the best. This much talked about idea forms the central core of what I have taught for decades. To give the gift of health to another through teaching our workshops is second to none. Bill and I talk the ‘truth’ the whole ‘truth’ and nothing but the ‘truth. Many so called ‘tabloids’, websites and bloggers post articles that are absolute nonsense and create even more mass confusion for the public. Many of these articles like the recent ‘Butter is Back’ by the ‘aptly’ named Dr. Lard works with the food industry (dairy council)!!!! Stick with folks who know what they are doing, folks that know their work inside out, that study consistently to deliver the most up to date studies and be confident that you are hearing the truth.
The brown lentil burgers I used in my video here are available in supermarkets. The non-organic 500g pack was 99p – the organic 500g pack was £2.49. I prefer to purchase organic produce, so plant based foods are still unbelievably cheap compared to meat and come without the saturated fat and high cholesterol. It’s important to remind yourself that along with meat burgers you can ingest hormones and antibiotics that are used on the animals. Use these lentils to create delicious pate’s, salads, lentil loaf (recipe in my book) and obviously the burgers here, they are nutty and earthy (just like me)!!! If you’re having a barbeque simply pop your cooked lentil burgers on the grill for the last few minutes of cooking.
Grilled Lentil Burgers
1 cup brown lentils (rinsed and cooked in filtered water until soft) 25 minutes approximately (Yields 3 cups cooked lentils)
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 large onion, finely diced
1 large carrot finely grated
1 tsp dried marjoram
1 tsp dried ginger powder
2 tbsps.. shoyu or tamari (natural soy sauce)
3 to 4 tbsp. whole wheat flour (or enough to bind the mixture together)
Yields 12 burgers
Preheat the grill to medium/hot. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Add the flour and fold until you achieve a consistency that glues the ingredients together adding a little more flour if required.
Using your hands make the burgers with two tbsp. of the mixture, squeezing together until they are firm. Place the burgers on a foil lined grill tray and grill for 15 minutes, turning halfway through. Serve with steamed greens and a side bowl of soup or make some delicious sourdough sandwiches. Spread some vegan mayonnaise on the sourdough bread, toasted or plain. Add a layer or two of salad greens, pop in a burger or two, top with sliced avocado, cucumber, sauerkraut or your favourite chutney like I have done here. This is also fantastic food for your lunch box, they are delicious cold.
Note; If you enjoy a smoked taste add 1 tsp. or 1 tbsp. of smoked paprika to the mixture.
Alternative to grilling; fry the burgers in a heavy based frying pan using organic sunflower oil.
Freeze the burgers in quantities that work for you and your family. Make the whole 500g pack and yield 36 burgers.
